GREETINGS!

This certainly has been a whirlwind of a month! Between Root Camp and Democracy Fest, Sandra Day O'Connor, The Downing Street Memos, Generation DFA, the War in Iraq, Declaring our Independence and Marriage Equality, the Progressive movement has plenty going on to keep us moving!

The excitement among Progressives, from all walks of life, is certainly a testimony to the true spirit of Democracy and Community. We as a democratic nation should celebrate our small victories as we work to grow closer to our goals. The barriers and obstacles we currently face are nothing compared to what is in store if we all decided to stop working towards a greater America!

We hope you enjoy this month's features as we further highlight groups and activities that work to unite our greater community. With you and your passion we will continue to reflect the true meaning of democracy and community activism! Drop us a line if you have topics you’d like to see covered in future editions or have links to progressive groups and activities that you’d like your fellow activists to learn about.

Google: Sandra Day O'Connor

Just about two weeks ago Sandra Day O'Connor, announced her resignation, as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. This news hit the media like a storm. Groups from all sides of the aisle reacted like the US had used it's last drop of gas. I received over 15 emails, within the first hour of the release, from different media outlets and activists groups like Move On, Save Our Courts.Org, The DCCC, The Shalom Center, the ACLU, NARAL and Emily's List, and it has not stopped. Even her colleague's opinions on the matter made the media. Despite the chatter over the past few years that this "Cow Girl" would be resigning, and the reading of the Tea Leaves, a few media personalities say they were caught by surprise. FOX claims that ideology will trump conservatism, the Christian Science Monitor says that conservatives will push for a conservative replacement, the CATO Institute holds up it's glass, and you know what the liberal media says.

Sandra O'Connor's absence will now give the country another major issue to deal with. Will her position be filled with someone who will threaten Roe vs Wade? Will her position be filled with a female, a Latino/a or an African American? Will we ever find another moderate conservative Supreme Court Justice who will stand to carve such a historic niche? Will Chief Justice Rehnquist resign this week? Will Sandra O'Connor fill the open position when he does resign?

The questions will be ongoing and so will the media!

Root Camp Fills the Big Tent at Democracy Fest

Root Camp, an activist collaborative training concept that is supported by Grassroots for America, held it's first introductory session in January at the PDA Summit. The second annual Democracy Fest, offered the best follow-up possible.

In June, close to one thousand activists descended upon Austin, Texas for three days of workshops, speakers, and fun! The event was one to remember and Root Camp made its mark among the top rated headliners as well as other outstanding training sessions held by Latinos for America, and Democracy for America.

Root Camp has become a national center for people across the country who wish to start locally-run trainings in their area and/or work together to create or share already created resources and tools. This concept is unique as Root Camp cultivates teams of activists, using their talent, time and energy and incorporating it into an accessible collection of on-line and off-line resources. Root Camp offers it's "mentoring" program as the link to all this activity, productivity and content.

Over the course of DemFest weekend, Root Camp provided both a Friday introductory session about Root Camp and a Sunday "Root Camp 101" session. These sessions included Candidate and Campaign Organizing, Recruiting Volunteers, Putting Volunteers to Good Use, Precinct Organizing, Earned Media and Activating the Base. The Feedback has been both positive and constructive.

Using the connections made with session attendees and the feedback they've provided we will continue to work with progressive activists to expand and tailor our tools and resources to accommodate different needs and interest levels and address any information we may have missed.

SEIU: Stronger Together

Carpenters Union Joins Change To Win Coalition

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America announced on June 27, 2005 that it is joining the Change to Win Coalition, the labor reform movement created on June 15, 2005 by the Teamsters, UFCW, SEIU, UNITE HERE, and Laborers.

The Coalition is a new alliance devoted to creating a large-scale, coordinated campaign to expand the American labor movement. Its goal is to empower the tens of millions of American workers who struggle to make ends meet and whose voice has been silenced by the overwhelming power of global corporations and their representatives in Washington.

United Church of Christ Supports Marriage Equality

General Synod overwhelmingly calls for "full marriage equality"

The UCC, a community of Christians with roots deep in the soil of societal change, took another giant leap on Monday, July 4th.

General Synod 25 overwhelmingly passed a resolution in support of equal marriage rights for all people, regardless of gender. It marks the first time that one of the nation’s mainline churches has expressed support of marriages for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) Celebrate the Return of the Congressional Progressive Caucus

The newly reinvigorated Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) sprang to life June 28 as more than 150 friends gathered to organize. In the process, they also demanded withdrawal from Iraq, insisted on health care for all Americans, opposed CAFTA, and denounced the President's continuing refusal to answer questions about the Downing Street Memos.

The Institute for Policy Studies' John Cavannah was Master of Ceremonies for the energetic evening celebration which was held in the House of Representatives Rayburn Building banquet room. The event honored the CPC, which welcomed its first Executive Director, Bill Goold. The evening also marked the official kick-off of the "Out of Iraq" Caucus within the CPC, with a fiery speech by Maxine Waters (D-CA). Led by Caucus Co-Chairs Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), twenty five members of Congress attended and a dozen briefly addressed the gathering. House members present included John Conyers, Maxine Waters, Maurice Hinchey, Hilda Solis, Marcy Captur, Tammy Baldwin, Jim McDermott, Raul Grijalva, Gerald Nadler, Dennis Kucinich, Sheila Jackson Lee, Diane Watson, Pete Stark, John Tierney, Xavier Beccerra, Gwen Moore, Major Owens, and Don Payne.

Declare Your Energy Independence!

Campaign for America's Future has started a campaign to Declare your Energy Independence! It is time for America to declare its energy independence once again.

A few facts about our Energy Independence (Found through Apollo Alliance):

  • United States has less than 3% of the world’s oil reserves, but accounts for more than 25% of global demand
  • The U.S. consumed 96.95 quadrillion BTUs of energy in 2001, almost three times as much as the runner up (China with 36.67 quad), and approximately 25% of the world total.
  • 2.7 million private sector jobs have been lost since January 2001, and more than 75% of those jobs have been high wage, high productivity manufacturing jobs.
  • Cities and their mega-regions face nearly $2 trillion of neglected infrastructure needs according to the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Department of Energy.
  • Every $1 Billion invested in public transportation supports 47,500 jobs.
  • Congestion cost American commuters 4.5 billion hours of delay, 6.8 billion gallons of wasted fuel, and $78 billion in 1999, and the problem is getting worse.

MeetUps & House Parties - Building Progressive Communities

MeetUps and House Parties are rapidly becoming an accepted component of political campaigns based on the experience of this past Primary season when most campaigns launched both MeetUp and House Party initiatives, collectively garnering hundreds of thousands of participants. These efforts rekindled a community-based way to engage individuals in the political process and progressive causes – and they are still going strong!

Here are some groups that continue to use, have recently started and/or will be holding MeetUps and House Parties to cultivate community bonding and empowerment: Sojourners: God's Politics MeetUps, Mainstreet Moms Operation Blue, Democracy for America, Move On: Supreme Court House Parties, Rapid Response Network, the Human Right's Campaign and Code Pink.

Neighborhood picnics, block parties, and similar community gatherings are effective ways to build the progressive community. These events do not have to be focused on politics but can be used as "meet and greets" to open the door for all sorts of possibilities. More focused MeetUps and house parties are of course always an option. You can start your own MeetUp or House Party initiative focusing on exactly what you or your group of peers are interested in.

Conversations With The Cabinet

The Backbone Campaign is a grassroots effort to embolden citizens and elected officials to stand up for progressive values. They are expanding the political dialogue by providing creative tools for citizens and the progressive movement. The backbone symbolizes an interlocking agenda, a coalition, and the personal courage necessary to fight for a future worthy of our children.

The Backbone Campaign, Progressive Government Institute, and a coalition of grassroots organizations have initiated a process to empower citizens to nominate, comment on, and rate progressive leaders to serve as a virtual Progressive Parallel Administration. This project demonstrates that the progressive movement is not an opposition, but a propositional movement, and that we are not content with running campaigns, but is prepared to run the country.

Phase II of the project is Conversations with the Cabinet a weekly Web-cast conference call and podcast, designed to create links between grassroots activists and our most effective policy and movement leaders. Past conversations have been held with Ralph Cavanaugh, Sheila Jackson Lee, David Cobb, Medea Benjamin, Tim Carpenter, Phyllis Bennis, Gayle Smith, Lori Wallach, Dennis Kucinich, Daniel Kammen and Bill Fletcher Jr.

THE TOOL SHED

Project Censored

Project Censored is a media research group out of Sonoma State University that tracks news published in independent journals and newsletters. From these, Project Censored compiles an annual list of 25 news stories of social significance that have been overlooked, under-reported or self-censored by the country's major national news media.

Between 700 and 1000 stories are submitted to Project Censored each year from journalists, scholars, librarians, and concerned citizens around the world. With the help of more than 200 Sonoma State University faculty, students, and community members, Project Censored reviews the story submissions for coverage, content, reliability of sources and national significance.

The university community selects 25 stories to submit to the Project Censored panel of judges who then rank them in order of importance. Current or previous national judges include: Noam Chomsky, Susan Faludi, George Gerbner, Sut Jhally , Frances Moore Lappe, Norman Solomon, Michael Parenti, Herbert I. Schiller, Barbara Seaman, Erna Smith, Mike Wallace and Howard Zinn.

All 25 stories are featured in the yearbook, Censored: The News That Didn't Make the News.

Re-energizing America

State Control: Sterilization, Lobotomies, and More

Republican control of the Oklahoma House of Representatives this year inspired legislators to introduce 21 bills and one 20-page amendment aimed at controlling women’s reproductive choices. One of these bills passed and is being challenged in court.

This legislative zeal for taking charge of women’s bodies reminds me of the “good ole days” in Oklahoma when our legislators legalized sterilization and lobotomies.

Sterilization of “Habitual Criminals”

Senate Bill 14, “Sterilization of Habitual Criminals,” passed the legislature and was signed by Governor Marland on May 14, 1935. Senator Louis H. Ritzhaup, a Guthrie physician and state senator sponsored the bill to perfect a law passed in 1933 (as part of the law to sterilize “insane persons.”) The section of the 1933 law affecting “habitual criminals” was being challenged in state court.

Senator Ritzhaup years later explained that his bill had been offered “from the eugenics standpoint.” Eugenics is a method which seeks to improve the type of offspring produced.

According to Senate Bill 14, an imprisoned man or woman “twice or more times convicted…of crimes amounting to felonies involving moral turpitude” would be “rendered sexually sterile without detriment to his or her general health.”

Exempt from sterilization were those convicted of violating prohibitory laws (dry laws), revenue acts, embezzlement statutes, and political crime codes.

Jack T. Skinner, an imprisoned chicken thief, challenged the law in 1937 after a Pittsburg County court ordered his sterilization. Skinner had first been convicted of stealing chickens and later twice convicted of robbery with firearms. These crimes qualified him as a “habitual criminal” whose offspring might inherit criminal tendencies.

Prisoners at the State Penitentiary, McAlester, paid $1,000 from their canteen fund to help with Skinner’s challenge.

When Skinner v Oklahoma reached the U.S. Supreme Court, Oklahoma Attorney General Mac Q. Williamson defended the “eugenic measure” as the state’s right to “maintain the purity and virility of the race.”

The High Court unanimously struck down this “eugenics measure” in 1942 because of “its failure to meet the requirements of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.” The opinion, written by Justice William O. Douglas, pointed out that a three-time chicken thief could be sterilized, but a three-time embezzler could not. The Court concluded that this unequal treatment was “as invidious a discrimination as if it had selected a particular race or nationality for oppressive treatment.”

Sterilization of the Mentally Ill

Despite the Skinner case, Oklahoma’s mentally ill did not escape sterilization as the state’s “habitual criminals” had done.

Senate Bill 275, “Insane Persons—Sterilization,” became law May 5, 1933. This law required sterilization of certain men under 65 and women under 47 who were patients about to be released from state mental institutions. This law limited persons requiring sterilization to those who, upon release, would be dependent on public assistance or charity and to patients “afflicted with hereditary forms of insanity that are recurrent, idiocy, imbecility, feeble-mindedness, or epilepsy.”

Newspaper accounts indicate that this law was executed in Oklahoma. An article in the Daily Oklahoman (May 25, 1934) was headlined “Hearings Set for 50 Due To Be Sterilized.” According to the article, two sterilizations had already been performed, and “There appears to be little opposition in the hospitals.” Later, the Daily Oklahoman (June 21, 1939) reported that “Sterilization of 30 women inmates at Eastern Oklahoma Hospital for the Insane at Vinita has been ordered by the Board of Affairs.”

Buck v Bell

Sterilization of mental patients had been upheld in 1927 by the U.S. Supreme Court through Buck v Bell.

The Court’s opinion, written by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., said, “Carrie Buck is a feeble-minded white woman” who was committed to the State Colony for Epileptics and Feeble Minded in Virginia. “She is the daughter of a feeble-minded mother in the same institution and the mother of an illegitimate feeble-minded child. She was eighteen years old at the time of her trial.” Further, she “is the probable potential parent of socially inadequate offspring, likewise afflicted… It is better for the world, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or to let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those from continuing their kind.”

Lobotomies

In a 1949 law, Oklahoma legislators delegated authority to the superintendent of each state mental hospital to “generally direct the care and treatment of the patient.” However, in 1953, after lobotomies became more numerous, legislators clarified each superintendent’s total control by saying, “The superintendent of the hospital shall have exclusive custody and control of the person of the patient during the period of time he is detained for observation or treatment or both, whether a guardian of the person of said patient has been appointed or is appointed by any court” (Title 43A, Sec. 93).

Records are scarce about lobotomies performed in Oklahoma. However, a “Report on the State Mental Hospitals of Oklahoma,” dated February, 1952, exists in the state’s archives. This report, made by the Central Inspection Board of the American Psychiatric Association, includes information about the Central, Eastern, Western and Taft State Hospitals.

According to this report, at Eastern State Hospital, “A consulting neurosurgeon performs pre-frontal lobotomies in selected cases…During the past year, 24 operations were performed.”

At Central State Hospital, “a few prefrontal lobotomies have been performed with cooperation of the University Hospital” because Central State “is not equipped to do brain surgery.” However, “the hospital operating suite should be equipped to do brain surgery.”

Taft and Western State Hospitals also requested hospital operating suites to do brain surgery. Taft reported that “brain surgery is impossible under existing conditions.” Western State indicated that its surgical suite was in poor condition, but that “a few pre-frontal lobotomies were performed two or three years ago by a certified neurological surgeon.”

All four hospitals spoke favorably about lobotomies and of each institution’s future willingness to perform them, given the proper instruments, equipment, and operating suite.

In conclusion, when our legislators take control of our bodies, the result, even though well intended, can be brutal and invasive. Once again, as in the past, Oklahoma legislators have successfully clamped a law on our bodies. This anti-choice measure, House Bill 1686, has been legally challenged. The outcome is uncertain.

Black Commentator: It's time to Build a Mass Movement"

An excerpt from the article written by Bruce Dixon, Associate Editor for the Black Commentator

“Democracy… does not come from the government, from on high, it comes from people getting together and struggling for justice.” – Howard Zinn, Spelman College commencement address, Atlanta, 2005.

Politicians are elected and selected, but mass movements transform societies. Judges uphold, strike down, or invent brand new law, but mass movements drag the courts, laws and officeholders all in their wake. Progressive and even partially successful mass movements can alter the political calculus for decades to come, thus improving the lives of millions. Social Security, the New Deal, and employer-provided medical care didn't come from the pen of FDR. The end of “separate but equal” didn't come from the lips of any judge, and voting rights were not simply granted by the Voting Rights Act of 1965. All these were hard-won outcomes of protracted struggle by progressive mass movements, every one of which operated outside the law and none of which looked to elected officials or the corporate media of those days for blessings or legitimacy. It’s time to re-learn those lessons and build a new progressive mass movement in the United States.

Thinking...

It started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then -- to loosen up.

Inevitably, though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone -- "to relax," I told myself -- but I knew it wasn't true.

Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time. That was when things began to sour at home. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life. She spent that night at her mother's.

I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?"

One day the boss called me in. He said, "Listen, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job."

This gave me a lot to think about. I came home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking..." "I know you've been thinking," she said, "and I want a divorce!" "But Honey, surely it's not that serious." "It is serious," she said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on thinking, we won't have any money!" "That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently. She exploded in tears of rage and frustration, but I was in no mood to deal with the emotional drama. "I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door.

I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche. I roared into the parking lot with NPR on the radio and ran up to the big glass doors...they didn't open. The library was closed.

To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night. Leaning on the unfeeling glass, whimpering for Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker's Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker.

I never miss a TA meeting. At each meeting we watch a non-educational video; last week it was "Porky's." Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting.

I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home. Life just seemed...easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking. I think the road to recovery is nearly complete for me.

Today, I registered to vote as a Republican.
