from an open letter from Black Box Voting (permission granted with placement of BBV link)
The California Secretary of State has invited Black Box Voting to hack away at some Diebold voting systems. The testing is set for Nov. 30, 2005.
Diebold Election Systems has been trying to re-certify its "TSx" touch-screen machines in California. Diebold has added stronger passwords and encryption, but even the consultant hired by California to evaluate the system reported that the voting system remains vulnerable to alteration of vote results.
This week, officials at the California Secretary of State's office invited Black Box Voting, a nonprofit, nonpartisan watchdog group for elections, to try hacking into the Diebold system. A specific testing protocol was provided by Diebold and the California Secretary of State's office.
Though the opportunity was welcomed by Black Box Voting, negotiations remain on the procedures. Black Box Voting contends that the proposed testing violates California Election Code §19202, which governs the request for voting machine testing formally submitted to the state of California by Black Box Voting on June 16, 2005. Also, Black Box Voting identified areas of bias in the proposed procedures, which would violate normal scientific protocol and cause voters to lack confidence in the results.

an open letter from INDN's List
We at INDN’s List wish you a happy and most blessed Thanksgiving holiday, and extend our most heartfelt thanks for your support during our inaugural year. Without you, we could not have accomplished so many amazing things in our efforts to support Indians in the democratic process in less than a year.
In less than a year, you have recruited Native Americans from across the country to join their American democracy by running for office.
In less than a year, we have done so many wonderful things together to make INDN’s List a tremendous success. As you gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving and holiday season, know that we are truly thankful for what you have given us and the future leaders of Indian Country. We couldn’t have done anything without you.
We hope you will continue your support to help us build INDN’s List so America can reap the harvest of the seeds we have sown as we give our INDN candidates the resources they need to run winning campaigns in 2006.
Thanks and blessings,
Kalyn, Dave, Lindsay, & Micah

This past week John Murtha of PA proposed a resolution to congress which called for a plan to start the withdrawal of troops from Iraq in a timely and thought out fashion. In his resolution (H. Res. 73), his reasoning is clear and he addresses the need for withdrawal which includes a planned timeline. Unfortunately the resolution was never known by the public, quite possibly not even read by the politicians who are now distancing themselves from Murtha and has been misrepresented in the media. This was a bold step for the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee who voted for the war and has, until now, supported it's continuance.
In an attempt to paint the Democratic resolution as a "cut and run" proposal and in order to use it for political gain, Republicans gutted it, changed the language, renumbered it and forced an immediate vote on their new resolution- HR 571.
This resolution fiasco follows closely behind a failed attempt to have a timeline in place for the events in Iraq. On Tuesday, November 15, the Senate defeated a Democratic push for a laid out timetable for withdrawal.
Recent public polls now show that over half the country is concerned about the war in Iraq, believe the country was misled on why we want to war, and want our administration to clearly disclose some kind of a plan to the public. In fact, today's MSNBC question of the day shows that 77% want to begin bringing our troops home. This is a call for a change in the "stay the course" plan we have become accustomed to.
Democrats have been highly criticized for not offering a plan and/or offering only plans that promote immediate withdrawal. The "Spin" on this is overwhelming as both of those statements are not true.
To date we have found these examples of issued statements and proposals, some of which have already been presented to congress, that highlight plans or suggestions for what to do in Iraq:
Rep Abercrombie, Rep Kucinich, Rep Jones, Rep Lee, Rep Meehan and Rep Woolsey
This is just a glimpse of the dialogue and the suggestions that Democrats are trying to offer to the American people. They may not all sound the same but considering the diversity of the viewpoints and makeup of our country they are in sync with public demand.
It is also important to note that Iraqi leaders are now calling for a time table for US withdrawal.
Truth be told, I am not exactly sure if someone came up with a "perfect plan" that the media, or those making the decisions, would give it the proper attention it would deserve to make it happen. It is also possible that despite this political debate, troops may start coming home before the '06 elections. Only time will tell.
One of the definitions of insanity is "trying the same thing over and over again yet expecting different results." It is time to open the dialogue, listen to the ideas and promote a change in the Iraq agenda.

As you may or may not know, all of the propositions on the ballot (Nov 8) were defeated. Schwarzenegger actively campaigned for Propositions 74 (Punish New Teachers Act), 75 (Silence Workers Act), 76 (Make Governor A Dictator Act), and 77 (Redistrict Gone Haywire Act). He also endorsed 73 (Endanger Teens Act) and 78 (Power to Big Pharma Act). ALL of these failed. Californians rose up against an agenda of power grab and right wing extremism and delivered a decisive blow to Schwarzenegger and his big money pals.
Newspapers and TV pundits will spin this election every which way, but here is the real reason we won: GRASSROOTS. We got on Arnold's case, and we got going. We made phone calls, knocked on doors, wrote to newspapers, spoke to our neighbors, protested Schwarzenegger wherever he came to pitch his power grab, and we got our vote out. We, as Howard Dean would say, showed up. This is a new day in California.
This was our day!
What a great day for California! What a great day for democracy! What a great day for California for Democracy!!

Thank you everybody who worked so tirelessly on behalf of the DFA and NJ4D-endorsed candidates statewide! We had winners, we had near-misses, and we laid the groundwork for the future!
Our Report Card:
Governor Jon Corzine - We are proud to have played a part in electing the man who has promised to be New Jersey's most progressive governor ever, and maybe even the nation's! From the Corzine Connection-DFA statewide house parties, to the individual efforts from so many of our members, we truly had something to celebrate election night with this DFA-List Win!
Linda Greenstein & Dan Benson for Assembly - In this swing district, Assemblywoman Greenstein won re-election, and both our endorsed candidates ran a fresh and exciting campaign that also went a long way toward securing the Governor's victory. Thanks Linda and Dan!
Jun Choi for Mayor of Edison Township - In a tight race, our candidate, Jun Choi, finished the job he started in the primary, and prevailed to become the next Mayor of Edison - Congrats Jun!
Thom Jackson & Janice Schindler for Assembly, and Dana Wefer for Freeholder - Morris County DFA deserves a huge thanks for helping propel this Republican District into play this year. In races much closer than "the experts" predicted, our candidates let it be known that there is a future for progressive candidates in every corner of New Jersey! Thank you Thom, Janice and Dana
Byron Arnao for Glen Rock Council - In this Republican-dominated town, Byron came within 15 votes of a seat on the Council. Byron will be back, and next time he'll make it!
Jeff Marshall for Hunterdon Freeholder and Damian Fracasso for Warren Freeholder - Often overlooked in recaps is the hard work put in by our candidates and supporters in the "Reddest" parts of New Jersey. But every dollar and every minute the right wing spends defending seats in "Red" areas means less time for them in other areas. Hats off our candidates and supporters in the toughest areas of the state!
Thank you again to all those who participated in the New Jersey elections and congratulations to all those across the country!
-Jeff Gardner

sent out, and reprinted with permission, by Lisa Pryor, Chair of the Oklahoma Democratic Party. Lisa Pryor was endorsed by Democracy for Oklahoma. The recent closing of GM plants will affect the entire country.
In the wake of the corporate decision by General Motors (GM) to close the Oklahoma City production plant, Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair Lisa Pryor said "attention should be focused on the 2,500 impacted GM employees and their families."
"We must put the people of Oklahoma first and that means helping these citizens find the services they need and jobs for the future," Pryor said. "We have a long and proud history of taking care of our fellow Oklahomans through adverse situations. We have done it in times of natural disaster and when other manufacturing jobs have left our state. We will do it again. Now, we must look ahead to what types of economic development and business ventures we can attract to that world-class manufacturing facility."
GM is closing the Oklahoma factory because of lack of vehicle market demand and not anything related to Oklahoma or its work force. Nationwide, GM is closing 12 sites in nine states and cutting its work force by 30,000.
"We have steadily been losing manufacturing jobs in this country. Democrats will continue to fight to keep jobs in the United States and not ship them overseas," Pryor said. "History has proven that Democrats know what it takes to keep our economy growing and the Democratic leadership in Oklahoma will address this situation and find the best possible solution for Oklahoma's working families and the sustained growth of our economy."
-Lisa Pryor, Chair Oklahoma Democratic Party

One of the Dean Campaign's legacies is that the campaign, and it's supporters, used the internet to organize, communicate, and fundraise.
This impressed Democratic committees and candidates across the country, but two years later, some of them still don't know how to utilize the internet to it's fullest potential. One of my goals as Chair of the Rutland City Democrats is to help the committee learn how to use the internet as an effective tool.
I figured the quickest way to demonstrate how powerful the internet can be is to fundraise through it. Since we don't have a large email database to send a solicitation to, I thought of another way to generate enough funds to get people starting to think about the internet's potential...an online silent auction on eBay.
By bidding in our auction, you will help the Democrats learn that the internet is a tool they should explore and use. You will also be funding the Rutland City Democrats in their quest to turn Rutland City blue again, and you might even be able to get some of your Holiday shopping out of the way early!
To see a full list of the items available, please go to:Rutland City Democrats eBay Auction Fundraiser
If you happen to miss the auction, please remember this concept can be transferred to raise money for your own group or party initiatives!
Thank you for your support,
Jessica Falker, Chair, Rutland City Democrats

Due to Hurricane Katrina, communities in New Orleans have been taken apart as residents (were) evacuated to adjacent areas and around the country. What steps are being taken for community reunion and revival?
In the Thayer School of Engineering (where I teach), there's a course called ENGS "Engines" 21 which introduces undergraduates to engineering . In the course, students are presented with a general theme like Survival or Energy, and their task is to work in small groups to identify a particular target group, assess their needs within the theme, and develop a solution to those needs.
The MOSAIC project is a similar kind of thing for Thayer's Masters of Engineering Management (M.E.M.) students. My students have engineering degrees from Dartmouth and a variety of other schools. In addition, many have completed their first year of the MEM program and have therefore completed courses in marketing, optimization, operations, and finance. Some of my students have also completed courses at the Tuck School of Business, which I can see directly outside my office window.
The theme of this project is Mobilization for Community Revival. I've provided some initial guidelines and structure: this project will be done in the spirit of open-source software development (e.g., the Linux operating system) and the "open-source" political efforts that have emerged in recent years
Any motivated person can participate - including YOU. Our task is to provide a structure to help you participate, drawing upon as large a pool of talent, social networks, and other resources as we can tap into. All so that we can make a difference for those who have lost so much since Hurricane Katrina.
You can also visit our MOSAIC blog site and we welcome you to join us in the reconstruction!
Thank You!

Dear Friends,
Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, many of you received an email from me, asking you to support the efforts of the Port Arthur (Tx) Public School Foundation (of which my mom is a board member) to provide grants to buy school supplies for hurricane evacuees who had enrolled in schools in the Port Arthur Independent School District.
The response to my request was overwhelming. Not only did donations come from people I know, but many came from people whom I've never met, who received the request via one of the lists I sent it to, or via a forward from a friend or family member.
Donations arrived from as far away as Cleveland, New York City - and even the UK!
I don't know the exact amounts of all the donations that were sent directly to my mom, but the ones that I do know of totaled $1260!
But that was only the start. . .
Kim, who works at Manor Middle School in Lancaster County, arranged for her student council to take on this cause as a fundraising project. They set a goal of $5000, and the principal and assistant principal promised to spend the night on the school's roof (symbolizing all those who were stranded on roofs) if they met the goal.
I heard from her yesterday, and the final total of their efforts was $8974 - bringing the total raised as a result of that one email to at least $10, 243!
You can read more about the Manor Middle School project.
As many of you know, just as the Katrina evacuees were getting settled in to their new homes, Hurricane Rita hit Port Arthur itself. My family is all safe, and their homes were relatively undamaged, but many residents were not so lucky. It's only been in the last couple of weeks that power has been restored to most of town, and students have only recently returned to school.
Because of the generosity of you all - and especially the hard work of the students and faculty of Manor Middle School - there will be enough money to not only cover the original grants for the Hurricane Katrina evacuees, but to also provide similar assistance to students who have suffered losses from Hurricane Rita.
Thanks again to all of you who made donations or helped to spread the word!

The internet community first heard about US forces in Iraq using white phosphorus back in December 2004- just one month after it happened. We knew it would not make main-stream National media for quite some time because the story originated in the UK and it was mainly a string of details and accounts. Even a Seattle Weekly article (read last article on page) was completely overlooked. Traditionally we have found that news that seems critical of the war can take anywhere from 6 months to one year to hit the public American newswires. We have also found that it takes something really big to happen to get the proper exposure.
The National media first mentioned the story as a result of an Italian news story which was recently reported. The response from our government was denial. It was then followed by the acknowledgement that white phosphorus was used, however it was not used specifically against civilians, which is what is not allowed during war.
The National news coverage of the controversial events has been going for over a week now with several articles just published today. One can only hope that the public becomes interested enough to warrant continued coverage and an investigation to what exactly happened in Fallujah and why.

Talk to Action, the first national interactive blog site devoted to discussing the theocratic Christian Right and what to do about it, was launched on Monday, November 21st, 2005.
Talk to Action, founded by author Frederick Clarkson, blogger Bruce Wilson, and 14 other writers, seeks to advance the national conversation on this subject.
Talk to Action, like such major blog sites as The Daily Kos, uses "scoop" software, that has proved to be highly conducive to online discussion. The site differs from other major sites, however, in that it seeks to be less freewheeling in tone as well as content. Talk to Action seeks a more thoughtful, civil, and nonpartisan tone than is found on many sites. While anyone can read the site, those who agree with its general purpose are welcome to become registered users, publish their own essays, and comment on the posts of others.

Teaching nonviolence, and acting nonviolent is one of the most important things to do today. As Huston Smith was quoted as saying at Vanderbilt University recently." 150,000,000, [that is] a hundred and fifty-million people have died at the hands of their own species in the 20th century." Nonviolence is pacifism, an action, not passive-ism.
More Than Warmth is an educational project for students of all ages to learn about world cultures. It fosters understanding, knowledge, and compassion between cultures through nonviolent, nonpolitical, and nonreligious means. MTW creates a forum allowing American students a place to process international events. While helping to create a growing awareness of world cultures, students also learn about regions of strife and conflict in the world. More Than Warmth offers students a chance to effect positive change in their world.
More than Warmth is currently working on our quilt project which provides a simple but direct way to help children understand and respond to the world around them. So far over 500 quilts have been sent to those in need to include twenty that were shipped to Aqua Prieta, Mexico, from friends in Arizona, and fifteen quilts to Lusaka Africa, India, and Kabul, Afghanistan's Rabia Balki Hospital.
Visit our site and see how the children of our country are quilting their way to peace!

The mission of Frame Shop is simple: "Repair political debate in this country."
It is more critical than ever that we change today's political dialogue. Dr Jeffrey Feldman is just the person to help guide the way.
Feldman says: " Political debate is waged through language, media and the power to control them. Debate is hugely important part of the political process. Frameshop is a place to bring political debate for a "tune up," a service station where the language we use is hoisted up and repaired. Most people don't realize until it's too late that the language they use in political debate requires regular maintenance. At Frameshop, we tune up all language used in debate from the mildly neglected word to the dangerously deceptive key phrase. Best of all, Frameshop is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just look for the "open" sign. "
Frameshop offers emailed talking points which are ahead of the curve. All those working to promote clear and quick messaging should visit and utilize Frame Shop!
