NEWS FROM THE ROOTS

Raising Awareness - The Grassroots Theatre Network™

Editor's Note: The Grassroots Theatre Network™ hosted events at the Lark Theatre in Larkspur, CA and the Bethel Theatre in Bethel CT on Wednesday, October 20th. GFA board member and GTN project manager Sandy Martin reports on the Bethel event and GTN coordinator Carole Mills reports on the Larkspur event. GTN coordinators are compensated for their contribution to these events.

Bethel Theatre

We had a great event here in Bethel last Wednesday night. More than 130 people came – great people, "people of America," (as we used to know them). There was love, and caring, and kindness in the theatre – such a wonderful gathering of friends united in a common cause!

At the end of the screening (we showed Bush's Brain and Hijacking Catastrophe), people came out of the theatre with hurt and sadness in their eyes. They all seemed to be asking the same question. "How could anyone, anywhere vote for Bush given his record, and what we know about his Administration?"

I am haunted tonight by the words of George Soros early on in his campaign. He said that he couldn't sleep at night because he saw the parallels of what was happening in America with what happened in Nazi Germany. He reminded us all that Hitler did not come to power through a coup -- he was elected by the German people, and he led them -- and millions of others -- to their destruction.

I cannot help but feel tonight as the German Jews must have felt as they quietly boarded the trains on the way to their deaths...It's like a movie...it can't be real. The scene plays on... We see what's going to happen...and we can't seem to stop it.

I hope that somehow, somewhere, America's great inner voice will rise up and be heard before it's too late... Peace. Love. Kindness. Where have they gone?

Lark Theatre

We had a total of 100 attendees at the Lark Theatre and the reaction at this screening was exactly the same as at the Bethel Theatre. We showed Hijacking Catastrophe, followed by guest speaker Jim Garrison, author of the book, America As Empire and co-founder with Mikhail Gorbachev of the State Of The Word Forum.

Both the film and Jim left people horrified, saddened, angry and best of all, even more motivated than they were before. We sold all our videos in less than two minutes and could have sold many more.

People left the theater inspired to write letters, make phone calls, travel to different states and give money. Perhaps, most importantly, they left grateful (I think I was personally thanked by nearly everyone who attended) that there is a program like this created specifically to inform and educate them on how their country is being governed. For the first time I can remember I am seeing large groups of people participating in their participatory democracy. (THANK YOU HOWARD DEAN!!!!!!!)

Congratulations to the Grassroots for America board for coming up with the idea of the Grassroots Theatre Network™. It has really been appreciated here.

NEW GROUPS TAKE ROOT

The League of Pissed Off Voters

The League of Pissed Off Voters is Building Blocs: Youth-Led Electoral Revolution Rocks Races from Minneapolis to Miami

Coming off a hugely successful voter registration drive that signed up tens of thousands of new voters, local chapters of the League of Pissed Off Voters are mobilizing thousands of youth to vote strategically on November 2nd.

After surveying youth voters in over 70 cities to find out which issues matter most to them (the Orlando League interviewed 4,000 people at salsa and hip hop venues), League members have endorsed candidates in races from school superintendent through President. They are collecting pledges to cast the League's ballot on November 2nd to create powerful voting blocs around the country.

"People are excited about the presidential election this year, but your School Superintendent also has a big impact on your life," said Zahra Alabanza, 24, Tallahassee League Organizer. "We've done the research so that we can make educated votes. We're not just giving our votes to politicians. We're making sure they represent us after we help them win."

Short and to the point, the guides cover many counties and explain who local candidates are along with candidates' position on key issues. The popular voter slates are written by local organizers in everyday language, this has made them a hit with the local 17-35 voting population. Voter endorsement guides are being downloaded from www.indyvoter.org, printed, and handed out in communities all across the country.

Stories from League Chapters around the country:

In Tallahassee, Leandra Padgett registered to vote in 2000, when she was 19, but was turned away from the polls, like many other African Americans in Florida. She was disillusioned, and stopped being involved in electoral politics. Then, this summer, she met members of the League, and since then she has developed a "voter's rights" flyer which she has distributed to her community. She has become one of the League's most passionate organizers.

In Albuquerque at a political fund raiser attended by many key candidates, Mark Rudd, a prominent Albuquerque resident, said of the local League, "I've been waiting thirty years for these kids." Two candidates for New Mexico district court judgeships, front-runners in their respective races, are public supporters of the League of Pissed Off Voters. "We really care about our future, and that's why we're doing this," said Katya Hafich, Albuquerque organizer. "We're organized, and we can have an impact on politicians' races, so it's inspiring to have the occasional politician get excited about what we're doing."

In Milwaukee, when Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker denied the city of Milwaukee's requests for more ballots to cover expected record voter turnouts, League members turned out to an elections planning meeting to get their point across.

In Iowa after Tim Baker returned from his military service in Afghanistan he and another student at Central Collage in Pella Iowa formed a campus group called "Informed Young Voters". Tim brought his first hand knowledge of Bush's foreign policies to his peers while he and others worked to bring candidates and mock debates to the campus. "I can't say I'm non partisan, I am partisan." Says Tim "I want to have a military career and I want to go into politics so I need to get people to the polls now so we don't continue to screw up."

In Toledo when a Toledo-based professor heard about the League, he gave them his house and car, and he also purchased a second DSL line for them to use. 5 League organizers moved in, and the chapter uses it as a home base. They call it the "Riverside Retreat." They asked for more donations and within 4 days, they had a Xerox, 3 computers, and a fax machine.

In New York, Mary Bacha, who is originally from Florida, is one of the driving forces behind the League's New York chapter. She is 17 years old. "My future is at stake, so I'm invested in this for the long haul" she said. "Even though I can't vote, this is a way that I can have an impact. Politicians make the policies that affect me, and I want to make sure that my community is represented."

About The League of Pissed Off Voters

The League of Pissed Off Voters is the field affiliate of the League of Independent Voters, a national voter-organizing program. The League of Pissed Off Voters engages 17-35 year olds in the democratic process in order to build a progressive governing majority. The League has over 70 chapters nationwide, including chapters based in New Mexico, Ohio, Minnesota and New Hampshire. Its goal is to engage 17 - 35 year olds in the democratic process, from the most local level to the national. The League is not affiliated with any political party, and encourages its members to evaluate the political platforms of local candidates of all parties and decide which to endorse on the basis of the candidates' stances on issues that the local league has prioritized

"Take Back Our Faith" flyer

Check out the Sojourners "Take Back Our Faith" flyer, available as a PDF at http://unioncountyfordemocracy.org/files/takebackourfaith.pdf

This flyer sends a powerful message that needs to be more widely distributed if we are to make inroads into the advantage Republicans have with people who identify as religious conservatives.

So spread the word. Distribute the flyer on Sunday the 31st. Target cars in church parking lots or hand out before or after services. If you know people in swing states, call them and ask them to recruit others to distribute the flyer. Post the request on forums you visit.

Count Every Vote

A request from your favorite New England Governor...

After the Florida disaster in 2000, Congress had an opportunity to fix problems and build a better electoral system. It failed to act quickly. When it finally did act, the limited reforms that managed to pass didn't receive sufficient funding.

Now we face an election that, if the results are close, could be even worse. Republican officials in several states have tried to keep people from voting, and the widespread use of paperless electronic voting machines means that some votes can't be recounted.

That's why we all have to take personal responsibility for the integrity of the voting process. Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey, who has been a leader on election reform, has put together a resource for all of us who want to make sure our elections are fair: http://www.counteveryvote.org

We have an obligation to ensure that our elections are fair and accessible. At this web site you'll find information about volunteering at polling places and reporting any problems.

We also have to make sure elections are auditable. Congressman Holt was the only member of Congress who saw that electronic voting machines were flawed. I support his bill to provide a voter-verified paper trail--but the fact is that many people have not used these machines and don't know what to expect.

As more people have learned about electronic voting machines, support for the bill has grown. There are now more than 150 Congressional co-sponsors. But Congress left town without passing it. That's why advocates for voting rights on the ground will be crucial. Please get involved: http://www.counteveryvote.org

When Congressman Holt started his work on these vital issues, he was all alone. But elected leaders and ordinary Americans have begun to follow. Join us to make sure that this time we have an election worthy of the world's greatest democracy.

Thank you,

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Things you can do on November 2

Here's a great list of things you can do on Election Day to secure a Democratic victory:

  1. Bring a cell phone to the polls to enable voters to call for help.
  2. Sign up to monitor the polls, be a mystery voter, or a closing voter.
  3. Print out a bunch of copies of the Voters Bill of Rights for your state, if you're in one of these target states:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin

Bring copies to the polls and table or flyer nearby. Make sure voters have their rights in hand when they enter the polling place.
  4. Make sure you have The Election Protection HOTLINE number handy when you go to the polls: 1-866-OUR VOTE

The Election Protection HOTLINE serves as an immediate legal resource for voters who are having problems casting their ballots. Lawyers, law students, and other trained volunteers will staff the hotline in Washington, D.C. Each volunteer is trained in identification of common problems experienced by voters, the election law of our targeted communities and the resources available to attorneys on Election Day.
  5. Vote Early, then Volunteer to help at the polls.
  6. Look up and take advantage of Volunteer Opportunities to Get Out the Vote.
  7. Report Irregularities or sign up to follow up on incidents (by signing up at the same URL) that occur at your polling place.
  8. If you're a lawyer, sign up with the local Lawyers for Kerry to help voters on November 2. If you're not a lawyer, but know a sympathetic one, get them to sign up!
  9. Bring a video camera and plenty of batteries and videotapes. Table a reasonable distance from the polling place, under a street light, and interview voters on their experience after they vote. [Note: Do Not videotape people without their permission.]

Make signs to encourage people who have trouble to come be interviewed. Be sure to have the hotline number available!

Make a party out of it - perhaps serve hot cider, brownies, and other goodies to encourage people to stop by. Organize a group to staff the table - there's strength in numbers.

INSPIRATION POINT

Band of Sisters

Win Back Respect's Band of Sisters is a courageous group of military wives, mothers and family members from around the country who have come together to speak out about the Bush foreign policy and its impact on their lives and families. The Band of Sisters don't just want their husbands and sons home, they want America to get Iraq right, and they've lost faith in George Bush to do that.

In the final week of the campaign, George Bush will be flying around the country trying to convince voters to give him four more years. But the Band of Sisters have a message for voters too. With their loved ones' lives on the line in Iraq, they know how desperately we need new leadership.

UNSPOKEN VOICES

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
Laws about which schools get built, who goes to them and who goes off to prison,
laws about whose money gets invested, and whose money just gets taken,
laws about who gets good healthcare, and who gets to choose between food or medicine,
all the laws that surround your life – shouldn’t you be the one who makes the choice?

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
First to go to prison in an unjust drug war,
first to die in Iraq in a false blood-for-oil war,
sent without enough food or water (but always enough body bags) in an illegal, all-for-profit war,
Don’t you think about these things you should have a choice?

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
Racists all over the country are saluting you,
because they love the idea that your life’s not up to you.
They’re free to do whatever they want to do to you
because, to their great joy, you’ve given up your voice.

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
Only you can tell us about your life,
all your everyday struggles and your every night strifes,
but you’ve just given up and now you’re hit with three strikes,
because, for some reason, you’ve decided we don’t need to hear your voice.

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
It’s your life that’s in the balance – whether you choose to decide or you choose to get stung,
whether it’s you who does the doing, or you who gets stuck with whatever’s been done,
is it your hand that’s played, or do you get nothing but the crumbs,
but if it’s only crumbs you want, then it doesn’t matter that everyone but you has a voice.

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
No, it’s not the be-all or the end-all of your life,
it’s just the first step in you getting back your life,
because, without it, people who DON’T CARE about you CONTROL your life,
people who don’t want you to have a choice.

To my Black brethren who choose not to vote:
YOU could control the laws that control your life,
you could be a force to be reckoned with, you have the strength to unite
because, together, you really do have power and, yes – you have might
but you, my ebony warrior, must make that choice.

In the tip of one finger, you hold the world,
with the tip of just one finger, you can control your world,
and one person, with might and determination, can ALWAYS wake up this world,
but the ones who say they represent, make sure they stand up for your choice.

Choose to be a victim or choose to finally take a stand,
choose to fight for what you believe in or be forgotten because, no – they DON’T understand,
choose to hold your elected reps accountable, and do so again and again and again
until they see that doing right by you is their only choice.

It’s time for you to stand up,
it’s time for you to be among the counted,
and when big money is against you, never does it mean that you have no choice.
It just means that you have to be smart, stand united and strong, and MIGHTILY use your voice.

Today, tomorrow, and your future – it’s your voice, your choice
A force united cannot be denied
Choose to use your voice.

GRASSROOTS OP-ED

Truth-tellers

Most of the politicians and pundits who speak to us these days leave much to be desired. There are too many who just lie but even the ones who are well-meaning are either more naive than we are or for whatever reason are afraid to speak the truth.

After the last four years we are desperate for the truth. As Jon Stewart said on Crossfire the other day, those who can reach millions of people have a responsibility to tell the truth loud and clear.

Every now and then someone emerges whose integrity permeates the room when they walk in – Bill Richardson, Howard Dean, Barack Obama – these are the names for the future. For now we have Kerry and Edwards.

At first I had my doubts, but now I feel much better about them. It will be up to us to move them left of center but the young John Kerry who spoke to the Armed Services Committee in the early seventies is re-emerging, giving me a sense of hope that I was afraid I wouldn't have again, while John Edward's energy is infectious.

We need people like these to bring a sense of sanity back to politics. This is our chance to dispel the collective shame we have had forced upon us and to restore pride in ourselves and in our country.

Without a Doubt

The following are a few excerpts from an important article appearing in the Sunday New York Times Magazine on October 17, 2004. The full article can be found at http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/101704A.shtml.

Bruce Bartlett, a domestic policy adviser to Ronald Reagan and a treasury official for the first President Bush, told me recently that "if Bush wins, there will be a civil war in the Republican Party starting on Nov. 3." The nature of that conflict, as Bartlett sees it? Essentially, the same as the one raging across much of the world: a battle between modernists and fundamentalists, pragmatists and true believers, reason and religion.

"Just in the past few months," Bartlett said, "I think a light has gone off for people who've spent time up close to Bush: that this instinct he's always talking about is this sort of weird, Messianic idea of what he thinks God has told him to do." Bartlett, a 53-year-old columnist and self-described libertarian Republican who has lately been a champion for traditional Republicans concerned about Bush's governance, went on to say: "This is why George W. Bush is so clear-eyed about Al Qaeda and the Islamic fundamentalist enemy. He believes you have to kill them all. They can't be persuaded, that they're extremists, driven by a dark vision. He understands them, because he's just like them." . . .

... "This is why he dispenses with people who confront him with inconvenient facts," Bartlett went on to say. "He truly believes he's on a mission from God. Absolute faith like that overwhelms a need for analysis. The whole thing about faith is to believe things for which there is no empirical evidence." Bartlett paused, then said, "But you can't run the world on faith."...

... The disdainful smirks and grimaces that many viewers were surprised to see in the first presidential debate are familiar expressions to those in the administration or in Congress who have simply asked the president to explain his positions. Since 9/11, those requests have grown scarce; Bush's intolerance of doubters has, if anything, increased, and few dare to question him now. A writ of infallibility -- a premise beneath the powerful Bushian certainty that has, in many ways, moved mountains -- is not just for public consumption: it has guided the inner life of the White House. As Whitman told me on the day in May 2003 that she announced her resignation as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency: "In meetings, I'd ask if there were any facts to support our case. And for that, I was accused of disloyalty!" (Whitman, whose faith in Bush has since been renewed, denies making these remarks and is now a leader of the president's re-election effort in New Jersey.) ...

... In the summer of 2002, after I had written an article in Esquire that the White House didn't like about Bush's former communications director, Karen Hughes, I had a meeting with a senior adviser to Bush. He expressed the White House's displeasure, and then he told me something that at the time I didn't fully comprehend -- but which I now believe gets to the very heart of the Bush presidency.

The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

WHAT'S NEXT

Progressive Coalition Create Potential Kerry Cabinet

Buoyed by the immense wave of grassroots activity this election season, a national coalition of progressive political organizations have launched “The Backbone Cabinet,” a roster of potential cabinet secretaries for a Kerry administration.

Led by The Backbone Campaign, Progressive Government Institute and Progressive Democrats of America the coalition has launched a web site – www.BackboneCampaign.org/cabinet – where people can nominate qualified individuals for key policy-making positions such as the Secretaries of State, Education, Defense, Housing, and Health and Human Services.

“Progressives are shaping this very tight election and are having a huge influence on Kerry’s success,” says Bill Moyer, Executive Director of The Backbone Campaign. “We see a Kerry victory as a mandate for a progressive agenda. We intend to provide the Senator with potential cabinet secretaries who support our values.”

“This is a Whole Government Election,” adds Dal LaMagna, founder of the Progressive Government Institute, “which goes far beyond who gets to sit in the Oval Office.” LaMagna explains, “There are over 6000 positions within the administration appointed directly by the President, and the people who fill those positions are the ones making the daily policy decisions. That’s why, for example, we need to find the best conservation experts to run the Department of the Interior, not the coal and oil industry lobbyists we have now.”

The Backbone Cabinet web site also encourages participants to rate and comment on the qualifications of potential cabinet members, affording visitors a chance to learn about and have a greater investment in the makeup of the government as a whole.

“We get swept up in the chaos and excitement of choosing a President,” says LaMagna, “and we forget how much more there is to the election. This is a chance for people to engage their sense of civic responsibility at an even deeper level. It makes the whole electoral process that much more meaningful.”

Moyer concludes, “Two weeks from now, regardless of which candidate prevails, we will remain active and vocal in the promotion of progressive values and policies. Identifying a group of leading progressives with substantial expertise in the areas represented by the President’s cabinet serves as an excellent way to communicate our vision and expectations.”
