Why Grassroots for AmericaSM?

In case you didn’t get the memo, today’s GOP isn’t your father’s GOP, or even your grandfather’s GOP for that matter. Today’s GOP features, features mind you, candidates for federal office who want to:

  • Privatize Social Security, i.e. end Social Security as we know it.
  • Turn Medicare over to private insurance companies, i.e. end Medicare as we know it.
  • Eliminate unions, let alone have companies actually respect their workers and honor their pension and healthcare obligations.
  • Privatize education, i.e. end public education as we know it.

Much of this is courtesy of far right-wing billionaires who've been channeling money into think tanks and front groups who can now double down as these groups are now free to run ads for and, mostly, against federal candidates throughout the election cylce. Here's one example of right-wing dollars at work.

Here is what President Eisenhower presciently had to say about such people in 1954:
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

Unfortunately, President Eisenhower, while prescient on many things, couldn’t imagine a Supreme Court that would issue the Citizen United decision declaring that gee, corporations are people too gosh darn it! So while people like Sharon Engle, Jim Buck and Pat Toomey are exactly the kind of fringe politicians Eisenhower was talking about, they are now the recipients of a torrent of cash supplied by equally far right-fringe billionaires.
