Framing Social Security

The following frame for Social Security was posted by Shai Sachs (shaisachs-at-gmail.com) on the dfameetuphosts-at-yahoogroups.com news-group list on April 14, 2005.

Needless to say, we thought it well worth adding to our site.

We are committed to broad prosperity, cooperation and protecting the most vulnerable members of society. Therefore, we are firmly committed to protecting Social Security.

Social Security is our national granary. Together, we add to it in good times, and borrow from it in hard times. This wise and time-tested system is insurance against economic hardship; it is the foundation for the broad prosperity that we have enjoyed over the last seventy years.

This vast national storehouse that we have worked together to build is strong and robust; left alone, it will continue to protect our most vulnerable citizens for decades to come. No immediate changes to this program are needed right now. If our stores should run low in the future, our first resort should be raising the cap on wages which contribute to Social Security, so that more people pay their fair share.

The conservative, regressive plan to privatize Social Security is wrong and misguided. It will plunder our national granary and leave each person to protect him or herself, alone, against hard times. These regressives believe that our country is too weak and too divided to work together to provide insurance for everyone. They are wrong.

We are strong and united, and together we have built a safe, strong storehouse that will see us through good times and bad for many generations to come. We must protect this valuable resource.
